How You Can Care For Your Skin & Your Planet
We all strive to eat healthy, to exercise, meditate, to spend time in nature, and lead generally healthier and more sustainable lifestyles. And yet, many of our skincare routines still rely on toxic, synthetic, harmful products from a bygone era.
At INSIDE The Skincare Lab, we believe that what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body. That's why we choose to use only sustainable, 100% natural ingredients in our skincare products.
Natural ingredients are not only gentler on the skin, but they also have a range of benefits that can help to improve skin health and protect the environment. And if done right — like in our carefully-developed scientific formulations — they have a better, longer-lasting effect than any synthetic counterpart!
Discover where and how our ingredients are sourced, and why this leads to skincare products that are better for the environment, your body, and your soul.
How we Source Our Natural Ingredients
We take great care in sourcing our ingredients, ensuring that they are sustainable, organic, and ethically-sourced. We work with suppliers and farms that share our commitment to using only the highest-quality, natural ingredients. In addition, many of our ingredients have certifications and accreditations that guarantee and prove their purity and effectiveness.
Early Rise for the Damask Rose
Once a year in late May, just after our Damask Rose buds begin to flower, our entire team wakes up before sunrise and heads up to our mountain fields.
There, each of us hand picks hundreds of Damask Roses carefully, placing them in a bucket of cold water before taking them to our cold storage. Every day, we stop at 10 A.M., before it gets too hot and we risk damaging the harvest — only to return at daybreak the next day.
Collecting Wild Mountain Herbs
On the other hand, rather than grow our own thyme and mint at scale, we’ve built a network of villagers high in the mountains and rely on them to pick the naturally-occurring wild herbs. Our sustainable harvesting strategy ensures minimal impact, employs local villagers, and keeps us connected to the natural world.
Relearning How to Fertilize from the Ancient Egyptians
It’s not just the plants themselves — we also work hard to ensure that our entire farming strategies are organic, sustainable, and environmentally friendly!
For the plants we grow ourselves, we use a pure biohumus processed naturally by feeding Californian worms. This beautiful, natural practice dates back to Ancient Egypt. They feed on natural, organic waste, and in return for their tasty meals, provide us with some of the best fertilizer we’ve ever seen!
The Benefits of Natural Ingredients
Natural ingredients are rich in native molecules of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help to nourish and protect the skin. They are also gentle on the skin, and can help to reduce the risk of irritation and allergic reactions.
Furthermore, natural ingredients are often more environmentally friendly than their synthetic counterparts, as they are biodegradable and do not contribute to pollution.
Synthetic skincare ingredients, on the other hand, are often produced in a laboratory and may contain chemicals that can be harmful to the skin and the environment. They may also be less effective than natural ingredients, as they do not contain the same vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that natural ingredients do.
Additionally, synthetic ingredients can often be harsh and stripping on the skin, leading to irritation and dryness.
These synthetic ingredients are usually formed as by-products of the petrochemical industry. That’s right! Aside from being the biggest contributor to climate change, powering most vehicles on the road today, being the largest inorganic contributor to landfills (in the form of plastics), crude oil spin-offs can be found in most synthetic skincare products.
Some examples of these harmful chemicals include:
- Mineral Oil — also ‘rebranded’ as paraffin wax, paraffin oil, liquid petroleum, white mineral oil, microcrystalline wax — this serves as a base for many moisturizers and lipsticks.
- Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) — found in most synthetic shampoos and cleansers.
- Benzene — a known air pollutant, benzene is what gives gasoline its distinctive aroma. It occurs in cigarette smoke and car exhaust, and is a known carcinogen. And yet, it’s often used as a scenting agent in synthetic fragrances!
This negative environmental effect of the petrochemical skincare industry formed the basis of our inspiration to develop a natural and effective alternative.
